Sun, Sand and Signs
Home again, after a fabulous family vacation, where three generations were fortunate enough to play in the sun and sand. Much of the time, we were all hanging out together, but some mornings, my husband and I would head out for a long beach walk, just the two of us. During one such outing, three heartwarming signs appeared back-to-back, reminding us that Michael was with us on this family vacation, as well.
The first sign happened about an hour in. Walking a short distance behind my husband, I spotted a small, perfectly heart-shaped shell lying in the wet sand. As I picked it up, I noticed it was about the size of a dime, just as thin, and smooth to the touch. Polished by the waves, as precious as a jewel.
With shell in hand, I rejoined my husband and after showing him my treasure, we continued on. A short distance later, I impulsively stopped and turned to face the ocean. Instantly, I noticed a tiny, white feather drifting down over the water. Soon, I spotted a second one, floating near the first. It was mesmerizing to watch these two feathers dance in the sunshine. I assumed I would see them fall into the ocean, but instead, they disappeared from my sight, into the backdrop of the bright blue sky. They became invisible to me. My husband, who had witnessed the scene as well, turned to me and asked what had prompted me to stop. I explained that I had simply stopped, for no particular reason. Lucky for me that I did.
Then, carrying on with our walk, it wasn't long before we came upon a huge message written in the sand. It read: "I LOVE YOU DAD!" In case there had been any doubt, and that perhaps the first two signs had not been enough.
All of our beach walks nourished our souls with the healing combination of bare feet in the sand, lapped by the waves, and warmed by the sun. However, the bonus of seeing these three signs during this particular walk boosted our souls into the stratosphere. Clearly, our entire family was present during this marvelous vacation.

One Tiny Feather Lightens the Load
Sunday morning, my husband and I headed out for a walk in the canyon, decked out in rain gear, from head to toe. The few people we encountered along the trail were all accompanied by a dog or two - in that inclement weather it seemed that, other than ourselves, only those who had to be out, were. We joked about walking our two invisible dogs and the bonus of not having to "scoop the poop".
We both felt the heavy weight of this emotionally charged day as we would later be meeting our children and grandchildren at Boal Memorial for our annual tradition of decorating of a little Christmas tree, honouring our angels.
Arriving at the midway mark of our canyon walk, I stopped on the sidewalk atop the dam and gazed down over the railing into the huge volume of water roaring down into the river below. Empty of thought, I became mesmerized. The spell was broken when, out of the corner of my eye, I saw a tiny, white object drift down beside me. Looking down at my feet, I noticed that a small feather had landed in the very narrow space between myself and the railing. I instinctively looked up for birds, but there were none. I checked the area around me to see if more had fallen. No, only the one. It had been six months since I last saw this sign from my son, and I was overjoyed to notice this feather, today.

By late afternoon, the rain had subsided, and by the time we arrived at Boal, the sun even made a brief appearance. After decorating the tree, lighting the candles, and singing some carols, a brilliant sunset became the backdrop for this tranquil forest setting. Later, after enjoying a fabulous family dinner, I reflected on this challenging day and felt overwhelming gratitude for the perfect way it had unfolded. It could not have gone any better.

The Weather Gods Come Out to Play
Today, we awoke to a beautiful fall morning - cool and sunny, with a few clouds thrown in for added interest. My husband had planned on spending the bulk of this day prepping for a dinner party we are hosting this evening, but when I returned from my run in the canyon, he was up the ladder installing the outdoor Christmas lights. I joked that this was a first - he normally waits til it's cold and sleeting to do this job. He replied that he had decided to take advantage of the great weather and asked if I could help. While holding the strands of lights for him, I looked up to the sky and saw two magnificent eagles flying overhead - they were out enjoying this perfect fall day as well. A minute later, I felt a light drizzle, even though there was blue sky above us. That drizzle soon turned to hail, along with a noticeable drop in temperature. I burst out laughing - there was no mention of hail in today's weather forecast. It seemed that the weather gods were playing a joke on us. Within five minutes, the silliness had stopped and the sun was out, once again. Unexpected moments of joy - they're the best.

Smorgasbord of Smiles
An entertaining nature show welcomed me home, yesterday evening. It began with a black squirrel scampering over the grass to the patio, then promptly stopping, dropping down onto its back, to soak in the last of the sun's rays. A short time later, I noticed another squirrel help itself to some small, green strawberries, unwilling to wait a week for them to ripen. Then, just before dusk settled in, a young skunk sniffed its way along the path beside the huge glass doors, before sauntering off across the yard. This late spring evening, verging on summer, offering up a smorgasbord of opportunities to smile.

Angelic Art
With my granddaughter happily seated in her stroller, the two of us headed out to explore the neighbourhood yesterday morning. We shared a muffin at a café, stopped at the library, chatted with shopkeepers, and played at the park. We then returned to my home for lunch, after which, it was time for her nap. I knew she was tired but instead of resting, she cried in bed for quite some time. I finally went in, picked her up, and took her into my living room so that we could quietly cuddle together. We settled into an easy chair and observed the backyard scene of birds and squirrels going about their day. Within minutes, she was sound asleep.
She would need at least half an hour, if not longer, to refresh herself for the second half of her day so I decided I would remain seated for as long as she needed, holding her comfortably on my lap. Since there were no distractions within reach, I embraced the opportunity to just be. Taking in the perfection of this little being, breathing in her essence, feeling our hearts beat together, I was well aware of how precious this time was. The sun streaming through the glass wall behind us served to heighten the experience, warming us both, and casting a glow on her fine, blond curls.
While marvelling at the beauty surrounding me, I noticed a bright, colourful spot on the end of one of her strands of hair. I gently ran my fingers along it, thinking perhaps I would find a loose thread or a fleck of who knew what. After repeated attempts to remove it, the spot remained. Perplexed, I picked up my reading glasses and found myself staring at a magnificent image rivalling the splendour of stained glass windows found in grand cathedrals. Right at the tip of this strand of hair was a round, highly detailed, miniature work of art - as if an angel, using the finest tools, had drawn intricate lines of design within design, then filled in the spaces with jewel tones. There were tiny circles, triangles, and squares, overlapping in places, embellished with various designs and patterns. The vision before me defied explanation but nevertheless, there it was. I did not need to know how or why in order to treasure the magic of this moment. Forty minutes later my granddaughter awoke with a smile on her face - she had had a much needed nap, and I had been blessed with another exquisite experience.

Lighter Days
Yet another storm blew in yesterday, with high winds, cold temperatures, and torrential rains - a dismal welcome for Spring's long awaited arrival. Now this morning, as I gaze out one of our home's full glass walls, I am overjoyed to see the sun shining upon the towering cedars of the nearby forest and am reassured that the lighter days are indeed on their way. And not a moment too soon.

Silent Screams
Experiencing total relaxation. For mind, body, and soul. Upon waking, allowing each day to comfortably unfold. Choosing to make only minimal plans in advance. Savouring an espresso on the deck. Practicing yoga outdoors. Meditating in the warm breeze. Hiking in the shade of the woods, or in the full sun along the alpine trails. Devouring simple picnics or elaborate restaurant offerings. Falling asleep under a feather duvet, to the soothing sounds of the mountain stream nearby. And yet, still hearing the silent screams in my mind. Accompanying me on this journey across the ocean. Loud and clear. My psyche continuing to process the loss in minuscule pieces. On that deepest level, wisely accepting only tiny fragments of the situation at a time. Just as nature intended. Leading me to consider Edvard Munch's famous painting The Scream. The artist creating a visual representation of the weather and surrounding landscape of that specific moment. He sensing something deeper in this expression of nature. He hearing a silent scream too.

Comforting Communication
Enjoying a glass of wine in these waning moments of this summer solstice evening. Alone with lights dimmed. Cherishing the warm glow of a beautifully decorated candle. One covered in a delicate swirling pattern of sage and coral. Sitting here reflecting on the moving events at the ISA tonight. Receiving a message from my son. Him describing a forest scene with sun shining through the trees. Exactly where I had been running this morning. Making reference to our communication there. Something we always engage in. Expressing his joy in being able to stay connected. Passing on encouragement. Knowing I need it. My mother coming through as well. Later, taking my turn up on the platform. Practising mediumship. Bringing a message through for someone else in the audience. Thankful to be learning to serve in this way. Then upon leaving, speaking to a woman whom I had never met. Learning she is also living with the experience of losing a child. Finding great comfort in our conversation. Both of us wondering aloud what this journey would look like without the spiritual awareness. Agreeing it would likely be very grim indeed. Instead, so grateful to know what we know.

Taking Flight
Spending the day at the cabin alone. Finishing up some chores. Then relaxing in the sun. Basking in the loving energy of the weekend. Feeling its imprint upon this space. At its peak, seventy-one of us gathering to share old memories. Creating many new ones as well. The last of the group leaving this morning. Those baby birds who had been chirping in the birdhouse all weekend deciding it was time as well. Taking their first flight this afternoon. Embarking on the next experience before them. Leaving the comfort and safety of the nest behind.

Spa Time
A friend and I recently spending time together at an outdoor spa in the woods. One year after our inaugural visit. Luxuriating in three hours of pure relaxation. Coexisting in silence. Mindfully moving from one experience to another. Enjoying a predominantly meditative state. Fully embracing the sensation of being, rather than doing. Soaking in the pools. Reposing in steam and sauna. Reclining in deck chairs beside the stone fire pit, bundled up in white terry robes. Tears of gratitude rolling down my cheeks while reflecting on the abundance in my life. Later, some of sadness while lounging near the forest's edge. Emotions mirroring the weather. Billowing clouds, cool breezes, sunny breaks, and rain showers. Observing a marked difference between this year's visit and last. This time around achieving a much deeper sense of contentment and bliss.

Under the Same Sun
A year ago today, I last heard your voice. Calling home from the cabin. Describing the long leisurely walk you had just completed. Along with Kelly and Diesel. Under sunny skies, around the frozen snow-covered lake. Hearing the pure happiness in your voice. Prompting my heart to smile. Knowing the three of you were enjoying an amazing weekend together. Holding onto this beautiful image. Under the same sun, my son, that is thankfully shining down on me today.

Self-Help Strategies
Recognizing the need for additional self-help strategies earlier this week, while navigating a predominantly grief filled day. Prompting me to make an appointment for an early evening massage. Contacting one of Mike and Kelly's friends to plan an upcoming coffee date. Bundling up against the cold and stepping out to absorb some late afternoon sun on the patio. While there, breathing deeply with eyes closed, asking for a sign of reassurance from my son. Within moments, hearing the distinct sound of a hummingbird flying by. The first one I have noticed this season. Then moving inside to settle in on the sofa. Rereading an old copy of The Little Prince. Allowing this exquisite story to wash over me. At the end of the day, none of these activities "fixing" the situation. Just doing what they were intended to which was to support my spirit. And that, they did beautifully.

Postcard From Hawaii
Very much appreciating these rejuvenating days in the sun. Yet, there is no escaping the loss. No place on earth exists where that would that be possible. Not even here in paradise. Marking eleven months today. Thinking about you innumerable times, each and every hour. While swimming with the honus and asking to share their strength. In conversation with the affable young man considering a job opportunity in Alberta. When spotting the handcrafted transparent shell ornament consisting of two doves with a heart suspended between them. And so many of the moments in-between. Postcard from Hawaii. Michael, wish you were here.

Healing Islands
Falling into a welcoming beach chair. The two of us returning after strolling barefoot for miles along the shore. Settling in with eyes closed. Feet resting comfortably in the sand. Breathing in the strength of the waves. Basking in the warmth of the cloud filtered sun. Enjoying the light breeze caressing my cheek. Feeling grounded. Meditating on it all. Within moments the words, "Help me heal" materializing. Intuitively repeating them with each new wave rolling in. Heal. This one word succinctly revealing why Hawaii, and why now. More than a vacation or holiday. The powerful elements of these islands lovingly extending themselves to us. Helping to heal the trauma our souls have sustained.

Fun in the Sun
Off to enjoy the sun and sand. Time for some long overdue fun. A good friend generously loaning us the use of her oceanfront condo. Looking forward to experiencing the physical representation of the vision shown in that meditation last spring. Walking the beach. Swimming with the turtles. Contemplating that link between the stars above and those below. Feeling infinitely connected.

Sun's Kiss
The two of us ambling along through the forest yesterday afternoon. Close to the river's edge. Silently enjoying the unhurried pace. Bundled up in down vest and gloves. Approaching a clearing in the trees. Slowing down even further. My face instinctively angling itself towards the sun. Like the potted plant on the kitchen sill. Keen to absorb the maximum available warmth and light. Continuing to walk with eyes closed. Lost in the moment. Deeply appreciating this kiss of life.

Life-Affirming
Such good fortune. Meeting up one recent morning with a friend on the seawall. Walking and talking for hours. Spending that afternoon with two of Kelly's closest friends. Sharing stories and memories. The following day, seeing Michael's best friend. Dropping by here for a short visit. Later, feasting with my husband and another couple. Making tentative vacation plans over an exquisite evening meal. Yesterday, walking the leaf strewn trail with one daughter and her puppy. Relishing the energies of the sun and wind together. Today, meeting up for a late lunch with the other. Spending precious time with one another. Numerous life-affirming moments over the course of a few days. Giving much needed balance to the melancholy ones.

Long Weekend
Another long weekend begins. Always appreciated. Bringing the gift of an extra day for playing in the sun. Whispering a quiet goodbye to the summer that barely was. Subtle hints of the approaching season now waiting in the wings.

Paradise in a Parking Lot
We pull up to an older motel complex alongside the highway. Tired looking room with basic decor and amenities. Looks and smells like it has passed its prime. Bend is close to fully booked so it will do. After exploring the town and enjoying a tasty lunch, it is time for a break. My husband suggests we check out the small pool, conveniently located in the middle of our motel parking lot. Separated from the asphalt by a mesh fence, no more. I envision cracked cement, peeling paint, and dozens of fellow vacationers splashing around in what amounts to an over sized bath tub. Upon opening the gate, I am thoroughly surprised. The entire area is completely renovated, everything looks brand new. Pale blue pool with glistening white tile. Shiny aluminum ladder and handrail. Crystal clear water. Comfortable lounge chairs on a clean stone patio. And no one there. With the pool to myself, I spend three quarters of an hour swimming mini laps, mesmerized by the beauty of the sunlight dancing on the pool floor. With the sun on my back, the rest of the world falls away. A form of meditation. I am gliding in that magnificent space where the air meets the water. Existing in both realms simultaneously. Pure bliss. I found paradise in a parking lot.

A Day Without Tears
No tears at all yesterday. Observing that there have been a few of these monumental days now. As the hours drift by, the pain still resides underneath most breaths that I take. However, it has begun to feel less raw. The sun and warmer temperatures certainly don't hurt.
