Salmon Inspiration
While swimming lengths at the pool recently, I was surprised to feel fatigue setting in around the 3/4 mile mark. I contemplated slowing down or even cutting my swim short, but then I considered the salmon in my local river. When they were young, they made their way down to the ocean. Now, those fortunate enough to have survived to maturity have returned to their birth river. Swimming upstream against the current, periodically challenged to leap over rock barriers, these salmon exert themselves fully for days on end. Their goal is to return to their spawning grounds regardless of the hurdles that await them en route. As I thought about the determination each one of them exhibits during that long and arduous journey, it was an easy decision to finish out my little swim without compromise.

Thanksgiving Trailer Style
Spending the final week of our trailer trip here in sunny Palm Springs. My husband choosing this deluxe RV resort for us to stay in, before heading home. Manicured gardens, hundreds of palm trees, numerous birds, and gracious staff. Enjoying a run this morning, followed by a long swim in one of the two outdoor pools after lunch. Looking forward to a complimentary turkey meal with all the trimmings, at the clubhouse later on. Celebrating American Thanksgiving. How easy it is to be thankful in such opulence. And yet, while relaxing in a lounge chair on the patio, overhearing complaints from some fellow guests nonetheless. Most of them travelling in large, luxurious units. Usually pulling an additional vehicle. One commenting on how dreadful the next four years will be, referring to the political situation. Another holding court in the hot tub, with his hard luck story of a having a flat tire. A third seriously annoyed by the flies. Leaving me tempted to work in that classic line of, "My diamond slippers are getting too small," during dinner conversation, between the stuffing and the pie.

Paradise in a Parking Lot
We pull up to an older motel complex alongside the highway. Tired looking room with basic decor and amenities. Looks and smells like it has passed its prime. Bend is close to fully booked so it will do. After exploring the town and enjoying a tasty lunch, it is time for a break. My husband suggests we check out the small pool, conveniently located in the middle of our motel parking lot. Separated from the asphalt by a mesh fence, no more. I envision cracked cement, peeling paint, and dozens of fellow vacationers splashing around in what amounts to an over sized bath tub. Upon opening the gate, I am thoroughly surprised. The entire area is completely renovated, everything looks brand new. Pale blue pool with glistening white tile. Shiny aluminum ladder and handrail. Crystal clear water. Comfortable lounge chairs on a clean stone patio. And no one there. With the pool to myself, I spend three quarters of an hour swimming mini laps, mesmerized by the beauty of the sunlight dancing on the pool floor. With the sun on my back, the rest of the world falls away. A form of meditation. I am gliding in that magnificent space where the air meets the water. Existing in both realms simultaneously. Pure bliss. I found paradise in a parking lot.
