Om with Oma
My three-year-old granddaughter has heard the word 'yoga' often enough, and knows that I practice it, but when she overheard me talking to someone about an upcoming class, she asked, "Oma, what's yoga?" I described it simply as a relaxing form of exercise, then asked if she would like me to show her some yoga poses. She certainly did. So after her nap, we each carried a mat out into the backyard, then placed them side by side on the grass, in the shade of a maple. Settling into seated Easy pose, I encouraged her to gaze at the trees and the clouds. Together, we then flowed through Cat, Downward Dog, Child, Sphinx, Butterfly and Happy Baby, before returning to Easy pose, to finish off by chanting Om several times. She did not miss a beat during the entire process - effortless, yet engaged, she was fully in it. Glancing over at her occasionally during our practice, and seeing the earnest expression on her sweet face, I was tempted to take a photo, but of course, that would have taken us both out of the experience.
After we finished, she spontaneously wrapped herself up in her mat and informed me that she was a newborn baby. Feeling reborn through yoga - she certainly picked up on that concept.

Mountain Pose
Practicing Mountain Pose upon a mountain top ... pure bliss. A local mountain hosted a free event Saturday afternoon, consisting of a rainy nature walk, followed by a tranquil yoga class. After wandering through old growth forest, our group of thirty arrived at the mystical Hiwus Feasthouse. Once inside, we settled ourselves on the mats, which had been placed in a circle around the stone fire pit. After an hour of various yoga poses, it was time for Savasana. Smelling the cedar, hearing the silence, feeling the peace ... absolute perfection. While resting in this final pose, I recognized the powerful combination of the four elements of matter at play here. Lying grounded on the Earth, there was Fire burning in the centre, Water raining down onto the roof, and with each breath, awareness of Air moving in and out of our bodies. All this led to experiencing the fifth element, the one that exists beyond the material world, often referred to as Void or Sky. Pure heaven. Thank you Grouse Mountain and Yyoga for your generous gift of this experience. The exquisite setting, inspiring instructor, and lovely group of participants all made for an incredible event.

A Wonderful World
I had not attended a yoga class for some time, opting to practice poses at home instead. Finally, this afternoon, I got myself to a Yin class, and I am so glad I did. Another cold and dreary week had taken its toll on me, both physically and emotionally, and I knew that getting out to a studio would help improve my energy level and disposition - it always does. Midway through the class, while lying in a meditative state in the deep hip-opening Swan pose, I began sending pink energy out into the room. Moments later, in my mind's eye, I saw yellow and orange energy waves join in. The three colours formed a mini rainbow, which was pulsating this beautiful loving energy throughout the space. The background music thus far had been made up of the soothing instrumentals and calm melodic chantings typically heard during such classes. Suddenly, while still holding this difficult and uncomfortable pose, Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World" began playing over the speakers. It took but a second to put two and two together. This song, referencing colours of the rainbow and the beauty in the world, was one of the three that played during Michael's memorial service. Now, love and gratitude washed through me and infused my entire being. I am fairly certain that during the thirty plus years of attending yoga classes in various studios, I have not once heard this song play. When the song ended, the music reverted to instrumentals and chanting, but for the balance of the class, then into the evening, the deep feelings of love and gratitude remained. What a wonderful world.

Last Known Photo
When I first saw the photo, I could hardly believe my eyes. The last known picture taken of my son. February 20th. Standing at the ocean's edge looking directly into the camera held by his best friend. Arms stretched out wide. The ever present sunglasses obscuring the expression in his eyes. A barely perceptible grin on his face replacing that 1000 watt smile seen in most other shots. What is his pose implying? Behold. Here I am. Come take me, I am ready. I am connected to all of this. Look at all this magnificence. I embrace the world. Some of this or none of it? I will never be sure of what he was thinking or feeling in that moment, but I will continue to wonder.
