When I awoke yesterday morning, I knew it was going to be a good day. For my belated birthday gift, I would be spending time with my oldest daughter and my granddaughter at a mother/daughter brunch and attending a performance of The Nutcracker ballet. The day began with an unexpected early morning phone call from my aunt in Germany, my mother's only sibling and my last remaining close relative on my mother's side. She still lives on the property where she and my mother were born and where their mother had lived from the time she married until she died. Our infrequent communication consists of a card and perhaps one letter a year, with an occasional phone call every year or two. She was calling with Christmas greetings and to catch up on the goings on of our family.
An hour after I hung up, I left the house, adorned with the ring and gold bracelet I had inherited
from my mother (both of which had been her mother's before that). I had consciously chosen these two pieces to emphasize the multi-generational maternal connection for this particular outing. When I arrived at my daughter's home to pick up the two of them, she told me that I'd never believe what she just found and handed me my mother's drivers license! She had noticed it earlier that morning on the floor amongst the shoes in her closet (around the time I was on the phone with my aunt). It had not been there when she had sorted through the shoe area a short time ago, but now there it was - lying in wait and in full sight. She couldn't even recall ever having it in her possession and thought the only connection might have been that after my mother's death, she may have taken it with her after looking through her Oma's personal items. My mother died in 2002 and my daughter has moved at least a half dozen times since then - uncanny.
After settling in at the restaurant, while awaiting our meal, I pulled out a tiny notebook enclosed in cello wrapping from my purse, entitled "Great Games: classic pen and pencil games for two players". I had no idea what the inside of the book looked like but the title and cover was promising. I had purchased it early last summer, thinking it might come in handy with the grandchildren while awaiting a ferry or a meal in a restaurant and had been carrying it around unopened in my purse since then. After tearing off the cello wrap, I flipped through the wordless booklet and found it was filled with three versions of patterned pages: 1) graph paper, 2) evenly spaced dots arranged vertically and horizontally, and 3) miniature hexagons. Upon seeing the dotted sheets, I instantly thought of my mother - she used to play the game of Dots and Boxes on this kind of paper with my young children but I had completely forgotten about it until now. I then showed the page to my daughter, asked her who this reminded her of, and she instantly replied, "Oma".
After enjoying the highly entertaining Nutcracker Ballet, we made our way down to the lobby where I decided to check the time and saw it was 3:15pm. In Germany, which is nine hours ahead, it was already quarter after midnight on December 10th - my Oma's birthday!
A massive amount of maternal energy appearing over the course of a few
hours, connecting my maternal grandmother, my mother, myself, my
daughter, and my granddaughter. A truly unforgettable day in this blessed life of mine.

Pure Bliss
Rather than celebrating just the one day, this year I enjoyed an entire week of Mother's Day celebrations. Some were pre-planned events, others, spontaneous. I was able to keep chores, errands, and shoulds to a minimum, then upped the self-care, pampering quotient. Adding in decadent activities that I would generally spread out over the course of many months, made for an incredible Mother's Day week.
Monday: boot camp followed by an hour-long massage
Tuesday: hanging out with my precious grandkids
Wednesday: seabus excursion with my granddaughter, exploring public art downtown and introducing her to drinking chocolate
Thursday: forest run, then lunch out with my older daughter and granddaughter, followed by a mani/pedi
Friday: rainy hike in the canyon with a neighbour, followed by a facial and a little shopping
Saturday: home yoga practice to the music of 'Jesus Christ Superstar', then dinner at the home of long time friends
Sunday: morning walk with my husband, followed by late lunch with my younger daughter
Seven luxurious days, including loads of one-on-one time with family. Pure bliss. I am extremely thankful to have enjoyed such an indulgent week. It definitely made it easier to bear the absence of my son today, and my well has been refilled.

Rest in Peace
After eighty-five years on this earth, my father died March 5th, achieving a goal he had set for himself decades ago - "I'm going to live to be 85." An adventurer, life-long scholar, health conscious man with a can-do attitude, he lived a long, full life. Fortunately, he did not have to endure a prolonged period of suffering before he died.
The last time I saw him, before visiting him in the hospice the day before he died, was at my son's funeral, five years ago. The difficult relationship between my father and I resulted in estrangement from one another for the past seven years. However, I am grateful for the many opportunities he offered me for personal growth - no regrets. And he excelled at being an Opa, throwing himself fully into that role with his five grandchildren.
Still enjoying downhill skiing a couple of months before he died, it was fitting that he was buried with his ski poles. May he rest in peace and fully experience love on the other side. I continue to send him mine.

Extra Measure of Care
Is there something in the stars, or just poor judgement? Within the past few days, I have witnessed several, serious incidents of driver inattention, all occurring within a short radius of my home. Somewhat unnerving, to say the least. Thankfully, none resulted in fatalities.
Last Saturday, while walking on the sidewalk near a busy intersection, I watched a car blow right through a red light. Luckily, no one was hit. Moments later, at the very same light, a vehicle pulled out to make a right turn on a red, without any regard for the traffic proceeding through on the green. Numerous drivers were forced to slam on their brakes in order to avoid an accident. Fortunately, the pedestrians had already crossed.
On Tuesday, while driving along an on-ramp to the highway, heading to the library with my granddaughter, I saw a car spinning out two lanes over, then hitting the median, before it eventually stopped. When I glanced ahead, I realized that the driver was reacting to the pickup truck that had just come to a halt, a short distance ahead in that same lane, facing the wrong way. (Coincidentally, a couple of weeks earlier, within spitting distance of this spot, I came upon a three-car accident that had just occurred, due to a drunk driver travelling the wrong way.)
Then today, my older daughter, with baby in tow, was driving down a main thoroughfare when a car pulled out from an alley, hitting my daughter's vehicle. No one was hurt, thank heaven.
Please let us all take an extra measure of care when driving. We all want our loved ones to arrive home safely. Believe me, no one wants to experience the alternative.

Spontaneous Support
While running errands in the Village yesterday, I stopped in at the local wine merchant. The staff were offering wine tastings, which is always a treat. After enjoying samples and purchasing a bottle, I was making my way to the door when a woman suddenly left the tasting area to come over and speak with me. She told me how much she had enjoyed reading my book and the insights shared therein. She mentioned that her daughter and my son had been high school friends, then went on to ask how I was doing. After chatting for a few more minutes, I thanked this stranger for taking the time to have this conversation, and how deeply I appreciated hearing that she valued the book. It was a brief, yet meaningful, encounter. Spontaneous moments of support such as this mean so much. Receiving evidence that Diary of an Intuitive is making an impact, is divine.

Cartwheels ... Just Because
While walking along the seawall, I noticed a young bikini-clad woman performing a cartwheel on the beach. This reminded me of an old photo taken at another local beach where my toddler daughter is cartwheeling naked on the sand. A simple pleasure, done ... just because. I got to thinking - when had I last executed a cartwheel? How old was I? Most likely in my twenties, three decades ago. Where was I and who was I with? What if on that day, someone had said, "Vera, this is the last time you will experience the joy of doing a cartwheel." Would I have laughed at the absurdity of that statement? Would I have thought the person crazy? Would I have then made a conscious effort to continue incorporating cartwheels into my life? As I continued walking, I decided that another cartwheel was long overdue. Arriving home, I placed my hands firmly on the grass, then swung my legs up and over. It was not very graceful but it was a cartwheel nonetheless. I am sure that my granddaughter will happily practise with me.

Exquisite Experience
One of my daughters recently sent me a photo of a hummingbird perched on her shoe. Yes, her shoe. When we spoke the following day, she filled me in. Since then, I have thought about her incredible story daily. She and her husband were up at their cabin when suddenly, a hummingbird flew in through the open sliding door, way up into the vaulted ceiling. Flying around up there, it came into contact with dust and cobwebs, before eventually returning to ground level, coming to rest upon one of my daughter's unoccupied shoes. Moments later, her husband carried that shoe with the bird out to the deck. Surprisingly, the hummingbird went along for the ride. That was the image captured in the picture. However, the truly amazing part of the story was yet to come. While the bird remained on the shoe, my daughter reached over and with her fingers carefully began removing one tiny particle of debris at a time. The hummingbird stayed put. After the cleaning, it lingered for another few minutes, then off it flew. When my daughter described this scene to me, I was astonished. I have had many close encounters with hummingbirds, those messengers of healing, love, hope and joy, but I have never even heard of anything like this. Feeling its heartbeat and being in such close proximity to those brilliant iridescent feathers - I can only imagine. I continue to marvel at what is possible.

Simply Perfect
My older daughter stopped by this morning and just before she left, we briefly discussed another overnight babysitting stint for later this month when she and her husband will be attending a wedding to be held in an outdoor venue just down the road from my home. A few minutes after my daughter left, I was driving down the street and as I passed the venue, I happened to notice a woman standing beside a parked car. Imagine my surprise when I realized it was the bride-to-be, with her fiancé emerging from the car as well. Are you kidding? I may see this young couple at a social gathering two or three times a year but not once have I seen them just in passing, or run into them in the community. Another "coincidence". Nothing earth-shattering, simply perfect. Love it.

Another Precious Penny
On Monday February 11th, my husband and I began preparing for our upcoming move. It was no surprise that the area I found the most difficult to pack up was Michael's room. Thankfully, only a few of his personal items remained (most of them had been dealt within weeks of his passing), but pulling his books off the shelf and removing his suit from the predominantly empty armoire was not easy. Tackling this room on our province's first ever "Family Day" holiday did not help. That emotionally loaded label served to intensify my melancholy state. Once the packing of the room was done, my husband began disassembling the armoire, which was situated in a corner, directly against the wall. With only a couple of inches of clearance between the ceiling and the top of that cabinet, dismantling was required in order to fit through the door. When he was almost finished, he called me over to help. As I picked up the base of the armoire, I could not believe my eyes. Lying on the floor was a lone penny. There was nothing else to be found under, behind, or beside the armoire - no old socks, garbage, or even other coins. Just one penny. The back of the armoire was solid wood, as were the top, bottom and side panels - nothing could have accidentally fallen through from the drawers or shelves inside. So, how did that penny get there? I have no idea, but based on previous penny encounters, I know who was involved. Sensing how difficult the day was for me, Michael's spirit made sure to send a sign of support. After I relayed the incident to my younger daughter, I chuckled as she half-jokingly wondered aloud if the occurrence of future episodes such as this might be affected - as of Monday February 4th, Canadian pennies are no longer officially in circulation. We'll see.

Gifts from Spirit
Last Wednesday, while seated in the audience awaiting an evening of ISA mediumship demonstrations, I silently asked the spirits of my loved ones to draw close. My younger daughter had a strong desire to attend this event in order to absorb some of that lovely supportive energy, and perhaps receive a message as well, so here we were. We listened as various people were given detailed and loving guidance from spirit. Near the end of the two hour session, the medium (who had no personal knowledge of my daughter, me, or my son) came to me and began describing a spirit that sounded like my son, but it was when she said, "He's like a big kid," that it was confirmed. The message Michael communicated was that he admired my ability to thoroughly prepare for, then commit to activities, which was in direct contrast to what had been his approach - that of enthusiastically trying new things, with little or no preparation. This usually resulted in giving up within a week because invariably, the situation failed to play out the way he imagined it would. He recommended I try finding a balance between our two approaches by easing up a little on the planning aspects of projects, and incorporating a little more risk and sense of adventure into my life, not always concerning myself with having all my "ducks in a row" (his words). He suggested that this might add more fun to my life. Before leaving, Michael sent both my daughter and me a huge, joyful hug. After thanking the medium for the much appreciated message, I left feeling that often the bigger gift from an evening such as this is the comfort I receive experiencing further confirmation of spirit's eternal existence.

Behind the Scenes
One of the best things about those experiences commonly referred to as "coincidences" is that they never get old - I continue to marvel at each one that occurs. My husband and I were out on a date in the city a couple of nights ago. After parking the car, we strolled over to an Indian restaurant for dinner, then checked out a few shops before walking over to the community theatre to take in a local playwright's show. Upon opening the program I realized that I had lost my favourite pair of reading glasses, purchased in Italy a few years ago. Disappointed, I mentally retraced my steps and concluded that I had likely left them on the counter in a drugstore, located a few blocks away. During intermission, my husband kindly offered to go back and look. While waiting for him to return, I began chatting with a mother and her young daughter seated beside me ( who were incidentally in the seats assigned to my husband and me since they had not checked their tickets accurately, and we were sitting in theirs). A few minutes into our conversation, I mentioned what my husband was doing. The woman looked a little puzzled and asked, "Were they designer ones?" "Yes, ....... why?" I asked. "I found a pair lying on the sidewalk about a block away and placed them on the retaining wall by the Seniors Home," she replied. What? Really? Still shaking my head, I hurried out into the rain, and sure enough, there they were, exactly where the woman had described leaving them. I returned to the theatre astonished, and thanked the woman profusely. Out of the one hundred and twenty patrons in attendance that night, this mother and daughter were the only two that I spoke to, outside of my husband. I was still trying to process this "coincidence", when in a matter-of-fact tone, the twelve-year-old girl remarked, "Oh, these kinds of things happen to us all the time." Indeed. I smiled, then sat down to enjoy the second half of the play.

Spirited and Beautiful
Twenty-eight years ago today. Welcoming my second daughter into this world. This spirited little Aquarian born cross-eyed with crooked feet. Beautiful just the same. Bestowing upon her a name that never quite fit. Then legally changing it just before her first birthday. So thankful this wise soul chose me to be her mother. That she picked this family to be born into. Teaching me to be a better person. Challenging me to consider other perspectives. Continuing to enrich my life with her love. Every day.

Mother Daughter Moment
Enjoying a cherished mother daughter moment yesterday. In a beautifully appointed tea house not far from home. Serene inviting atmosphere. Spending time together. This morning, reflecting on a very poignant mother daughter experience with my own mom. Fifteen years ago. Spending an afternoon seated side by side. Each in our own comfortable recliners. Chatting about this and that. Warm attentive staff hovering about. In the chemo clinic at our local hospital. Each receiving our own unique life prolonging elixirs. The two doctors coincidentally scheduling our treatments for the same time. An image that will stay with me always. Today recognizing the similarities amidst the stark contrasts of those two experiences. Mothers and daughters connecting.

Life-Affirming
Such good fortune. Meeting up one recent morning with a friend on the seawall. Walking and talking for hours. Spending that afternoon with two of Kelly's closest friends. Sharing stories and memories. The following day, seeing Michael's best friend. Dropping by here for a short visit. Later, feasting with my husband and another couple. Making tentative vacation plans over an exquisite evening meal. Yesterday, walking the leaf strewn trail with one daughter and her puppy. Relishing the energies of the sun and wind together. Today, meeting up for a late lunch with the other. Spending precious time with one another. Numerous life-affirming moments over the course of a few days. Giving much needed balance to the melancholy ones.

Eight Months and Thirty Years
A morning filled with intense emotions. The highs and lows of motherhood swirling within. Today marking thirty years of being a mother. Reflecting on how astonishing it feels to have a daughter this old. Appreciating the good fortune of being able to share my life with her. Valuing our loving relationship. So proud of the woman she is. Simultaneously, recognizing it was Monday morning eight months ago today when my son left this world. The feelings of grief understandably heightened. Powerful emotions stemming from these two extreme experiences. Coexisting. Realizing love is at the core of it all.

Sparkling Chandelier
A few days ago, one of my daughters stopped by and with a grin on her face announced, “Guess who came over to my place last night?" “Who?” I inquired. “Mike and Kelly!” she answered. With a huge smile on her face, she proceeded to fill me in. A good friend had been invited over to her place for a visit. Just the two of them spending an evening together. The songs from Mike’s service playing in the background. Conversation soon turning to spiritual beliefs and the afterlife. Discussing the book, “The Five People You Meet in Heaven”. The idea that when it’s your time, it’s your time. My daughter reiterating that energy continues to exist as energy. It does not die. And that for her, this made it all somewhat easier to bear. In that moment, the chandelier hanging above them caught their attention. The intensity of the light in the bulbs began fluctuating wildly. Brighter, dimmer. Continuously moving from one to the other. “Sparkling” was the word she used. Both women could feel the very playful, humorous and loving energy in the room and instantly knew who was behind this. They burst out laughing as they toasted Mike and Kelly’s presence. Twenty minutes later, it had all settled down. A powerful experience that some may have found upsetting. These two however, reassured that our loved ones spirits are very much present in our lives.
