Uncanny Connection
New Year's Day ... what a wonderful start to the year. My husband and I made the leisurely hour's drive to Squamish to view the multitude of eagles wintering there. To be in the presence of these majestic beings is always awe-inspiring. During our riverside walk, we witnessed dozens of eagles soaring, preening, squawking, and feasting. Upon our return to the car, I took a chance and made an impromptu call to an old friend. It had been over a decade since we had last spoken, having lost touch after his divorce and subsequent move to another province. I had heard that he was remarried and now living here. Well, he generously invited us over and ten minutes later, we were in his home. Our relationship quickly picked up where it had left off all those years ago. His wife was very welcoming and easy to talk to. After a short time, I realized that she and I have many shared interests, including some of the same obscure book titles on our shelves. During the course of the afternoon, our friend revealed that his wife had also lost a son due to accidental death. He too, twenty-five years old. Uncanny that this woman and I also share the experience of dealing with this particular life-changing event. So glad I made the call. So glad they were home. So glad to have renewed one friendship and opened the door to the beginning of another.

A Special Rose
One of the many fabulous aspects of the garden at our new home is a large and plentiful strawberry patch. Whether I am popping out barefoot in my housecoat to pick berries for breakfast or going out later in the day to gather some for a salad, I feel gratitude for these tasty gifts of nature. An odd feature of this space, however, is that in the centre of this dense strawberry patch grows one large, lone, red rose. This vibrant, large-petalled blossom stands elegantly poised above its small, red neighbours. When I first noticed this rose, I imagined more would follow, but it remains the one and only. Gazing upon this scene, I am reminded of Antoine de Saint Exupéry's The Little Prince story wherein the only large flower blooming on the prince's small planet is a single red rose. He tends to this flower faithfully, all the while believing it to be the only one in existence. Then, while visiting Earth, he is shocked to realize this is not the case when he sees thousands of roses in just one garden. However, evetually he recognizes that it is because of his deep friendship with that one red rose on his planet that makes her so special, and he appreciates her even more. And so it is here in this garden - each and every time I pick berries from that strawberry patch, my heart smiles at this special rose, the only one in this entire garden.

Precious Painted Rocks
A close friend of Kelly's calling to share a beautiful love story. Regarding an incident occurring at her recent outdoor wedding. Held on the property of a lakeside summer camp for teen girls. This bride-to-be having to adjust to the fact that Kelly would not be there as her maid of honour. Something they had previously agreed upon. Instead, incorporating little touches throughout the day to represent her friend as best she could. Including the best man carrying a single rose during the ceremony. Later, while mingling with her guests, being asked about the significance of the rose by someone unaware of the history. The bride briefly explaining the situation. Moments later, her young niece, the flower girl, joining the group. Wanting to show her aunt the treasure she had just found. Discovering a hand painted rock lying on a pile of dirt, away from the crowds. Golden in colour, with spots of blue, green and yellow paint scattered around the circumference. The name Kelly spelled out in bold, black letters on the top! What a gift. An unmistakable sign. Reassuring the bride of Kelly's presence on this very significant day. Following our conversation, me recalling another special painted rock in existence personalized with Kelly's name. From my oldest daughter's wedding, less than two years ago. Stephanie and her friends decorating stones with glitter paint. One for each guest, with both first and last name. Using them as place settings at the dinner. Kelly, like most of us, taking hers home as a keepsake. Precious painted rocks. Symbolizing love, friendship, and family connection.

Valuable Gifts
Wow! What a fabulous gathering of youthful energy at our home this weekend. Close to thirty of Mike and Kelly's good friends coming together to welcome the season. Sharing friendship, conversation, and good cheer. Crafting tree ornaments containing mini photos. Old stories and new ones making the rounds. All in an atmosphere infused with love and joy. This, Michael's wish for them all. To stay close. Support each other. Further evidence that valuable gifts can be realized when acting on the power of a dream.

Warmed Through and Through
Time out. Spending two nights with a friend at her ocean side cottage. No plans. This day leisurely unfolding before me. A blustery winter storm playing out on the other side of the huge picture window. Logs crashing. Gulls soaring. Cedars dancing. So cosy inside. Warmed by a wood burning fireplace. Meditating on the wind and waves. Relaxation and peacefulness infusing the space. Truly grateful for this friendship. Relishing in the luxury of such a generous opportunity.

Lasting Friendships
A walk along the seawall this morning with a friend of forty years. Time to catch up on each other's lives. A daily occurrence in junior high. Less frequent during college and university life. As young wives and working mothers, a couple of times a year. More often now. Our life philosophies may be different, daily routines unalike, and our neighbourhoods further apart. It is the similarities however, that have kept us connected. Married over thirty years. Mothering three children. Navigating family dynamics. We both know what is involved. The two of us valuing this relationship and making the effort to stay in touch a few times a year, every year. Lasting friendships. Priceless.
